Some Type I diabetics engage in diabulimia, a dangerous practice of skipping or decreasing the prescribed insulin dose to control weight. The complications include uncontrolled blood glucose, possible eye sight, kidney, and nerve irreversible damages. Sadly, the goal for permanent weight loss is seldom achieved.

This condition cannot be taken lightly. As soon as possible, the individuals and families should find professional help from three medical disciplines: an endocrinologist, a psycho-therapist with medical understanding, and a registered dietitian (RD) not only has passion with eating disorders but most importantly is working with a diabetic clinic or diabetic department in a hospital.

Ms. Shih is currently working at the LPCH (Children’s Hospital @ Stanford) diabetic clinic. With her extensive experience in treating eating disorders, she devotes her energy toward patients with diabulimia. Her goals are to raise diabulimia awareness in the medical community and provide diabulimia resources to the public.

Grace's termination to help individuals and families with diabulimia lead her to write the book: " Diabulimia: What It Is and How to Treat It; A resouces for individuals and families and a tool for health personnel", the first diabulimia book ever published!

Please click on diabulimia articles for her article and nutrition presentations for her diabulimia speaking engagements. Grace helps individuals with diabulimia from teens to older adults. She guides them the process of losing appropriate amount of weight (if needed) with proper diabetic management; works with endocrinologists to keep them metabolically under control; and aliens with psycho-therapists to walk them through their struggle.

Here are some  tips for the diabetic camp leaders.
