Book Reviews:
This much needed first-time look into the complex world of “diabulimia” (or ED-DMT1) is a must-read for individuals suffering from co-occurring diabetes and eating disorders, their families, and clinicians alike. Grace has managed to take a complex and mostly unknown phenomenon and make it clear and concise. Its reader-friendly format presents research and valuable information on this complicated condition coupled with powerful real life stories from those who have suffered greatly from the devastating effects of this diagnosis.
With decades of valuable nutritional knowledge and a desire to help, Grace has succeeded in offering the reader a peek into the lives of those who have felt first-hand the dangers of this complex disorder. DIABULIMIA: Diabetes + Eating Disorders; What It Is and How to Treat It: A Guide for Individuals and Families; A Tool for Health Personnel provides a valuable step toward increasing awareness of the challenging nature of working with diabulimia for professionals while also providing practical talking points from which to launch the conversations that need to be happening. This book is a must-read for any endocrinologist who treats patients with Type I diabetes. Grace outlines in a very clear, straightforward manner all of the essential angles concerning diabulimia. This is a condition that many physicians unfortunately do not know about, and so many girls are left to fend for themselves in terms of treatment and recovery. This book is a potent leap towards decreasing the glaring gap that exists between patient presentation and clinical recognition, and I hope that every psychologist, nutritionist, diabetes educator, nurse, and ESPECIALLY family member who come into contact with diabetes patients will have a chance to read it. This book really presents in a very frill-free - and almost interactive - fashion, the key ways of recognizing diabulimia, the methods that sufferers use to deceive their doctors and family, and legitimate recommendations/suggestions for treatment. The background she presents is extensive, and I especially commend the inclusion of different patient perspectives who are suffering or who have suffered from diabulimia. As a former patient with the condition, I can truly say that much of the material in here is very well researched and insightful. If you are thinking twice about buying this book, all I can say is - DONT

I am thrilled that a comprehensive manual on this topic has finally been published. The author clearly identifies individuals at risk for diabulimia, diagnostic signs to look for, and maps out appropriate and practical interventions. I especially appreciated the section on appealing to individuals' needs and goals (with very specific examples)in order to enhance their motivation to stop this behavior. The language of this book is accessible to both medical professionals and parents.
This easy to read and comprehensive guide is a must read for all health care professionals. Nutritionist Grace Shih does a superb job of blending insightful anecdotes with solid research and expertise to explain what diabulimia is, and how to recognize and treat it.

I am a dietetics student and found this book very eye opening. We learn about diabetes and eating disorders in school but I had never heard about diabulimia. I am so grateful for all the information. The educational tools in this book are outstanding. I love the practicality. I have brought up the topic with my peers and it has been a source of discussion for many of us students. Thank you Grace Shih for writing such a needed book.
